Twitter could easily have been the standard protocol for #iot cross communication with ‘annotations.’

There are many areas of IOT which need standards for true interobject communications. The standards organizations are not doing a good job because they are often driven by businesses with a desire for closed proprietary systems to make money. What is needed are true grass roots open standards and luckily there are some quite good starting points. Not all of these are truly open, but open varieties can be created. I have set up a non-profit to help encourage such open standards, openiotfoundation.org, but it is early days so far. So what standards are there to start with? Clearly, the core of the Internet is based on the defacto Ethernet and Wifi standards. There are other wired and, more importantly, wireless protocols which will become useful at “the edge” of the IOT but it is pretty clear that existing wifi and wired standards will be at the core of IOT.
