3D printed parts avoid production meltdown #3dprinting

The hook-shaped parts lift the wrapped bars onto a conveyor belt during the production process. They are typically replaced three times a month and each part is handmade, taking up to one month for delivery. The additive manufacturing meant that the customised replacement parts were available in less than a week, reducing downtime, and proved to be just as effective as the metal versions. The Stratasys Fortus 450mc production 3D printer used at the factory, 3D prints the hooks using FDM Nylon 12CF composite material (a carbon-filled thermoplastic containing 35% chopped carbon-fibre) that is strong enough to replace metal. The factory team report being impressed with the high stiffness-to-weight ratio of the FDM Nylon 12CF, resulting in extremely rigid parts.
