How to Read Data Sheets: Linear Regulators (More Power)

Increasing the current capacity of your linear regulator is harder than you think and may not be worth the trouble. In my previous column , I gave an example using an LM7805 regulator to provide 5V at 1.5A from a 12V supply. By the end of that column, we had concluded that -- under these -- conditions the regulator would dissipate 10.5W, but that it was only allowed to dissipate 5.23W without a heatsink. Now, this example may seem a little extreme, but the scenario is not uncommon (think of a car charger for a cell phone), and it illustrates why switching regulators have become popular. So, let us continue with this example since there is more to learn here that is relevant to other applications.
