Self-healing, conductive, sensing, self-powered, stretchable, flexible 'super-skin' is under development at Stanford University, Professor Zhenan Bao, Professor of Chemical Engineering, who leads the super-skin research group, told the recent Globalpress Summit in Santa Cruz. Bao's team has developed a conductive material which can be cut in half and, 30 minutes later, the two halves will bond back into a whole without losing any of its properties. The polymer material used consists of long chains of molecules joined by hydrogen bonds. The dynamic bonds allow for self- healing. The molecules break apart but, when reconnected, reorganize themselves and repair the break.
