China aims at BeiDou Navigation Satellite System global coverage in 2020 Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Monday 30 December 2013] The China-developed BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) began commercial operation for most of the Asia Pacific region, including China and neighboring countries, with a constellation of 16 BeiDou satellites on December 27, 2012, and it will expand to cover the whole world with more than 30 satellites in 2020, according to a government body managing the project. China will launch next-generation BeiDou satellites around the end of 2014 to start BDS global coverage, China Satellite Navigation System Management Office said in a recent press release. BDS is expected to share 30% of satellite navigation services in the China market by 2015 and the market share will continue to rise, the office said.
