The American Radio Relay League’s members are classic pre-Internet hackers. In addition to being early adopters of microcomputers (for automated Morse code transmission and reception) and using the Moon for over-the-horizon communications, they created a series of increasingly-complex OSCAR satellites (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) beginning in December 12, 1961…barely four years after the launch of Sputnik I. Most OSCARs hitchhike into orbit as “secondary payloads” (i.e. ballast) aboard commercial and government launch vehicles.
