Microsoft urged to give more design flexibility on Windows Phone 8 Daniel Shen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 29 March 2012] Handset makers in Taiwan have urged Microsoft to provide more flexibility to enable smartphone makers to modify applications and the user interface on Window Phone 8 so that smartphone makers will be able to come out with differentiated devices, according to industry sources. The suggestion comes after brand vendors including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and HTC have launched Windows Phone 7.5-based smartphones in the US or China, only to see flat sales, the sources indicated. Although the market share of Windows Phone-based smartphones edged up slightly in Europe and Asia in the fourth quarter of 2011, the ratio of Windows Phones was below 5% in all major markets, the sources revealed.
