Intel urged to support DDR4 ahead of schedule Josephine Lien, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 13 April 2012] Samsung Electronics reportedly has been trying to persuade Intel to launch its DDR4-supporting server platforms ahead of the planned 2014 schedule due to concerns that making DDR3 chips is now unprofitable due to low prices, according to industry observers. Currently only Samsung and Hynix Semiconductor have completed the development of DDR4 products, and are getting ready for the transition to the next-generation memory standard, the observers noted. Despite a recent rally amid concerns that Elpida Memory's possible exit from the segment might cause global DDR3 supply to shrink, prices for the mainstream PC memory have fallen rapidly since late 2011.
