Taiwan market: PHS operator Fitel goes bankrupt Irene Chen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Monday 29 December 2014] First International Telecom (Fitel), the only PHS low-power mobile communication operator in Taiwan, has declared bankruptcy. Fitel said it received court permission to end a restructuring process that had started in May 2010 and begin bankruptcy proceedings. Fitel, which started PHS services in 2001, has seen fast diminishing user numbers due to competition from the 3G and 4G sectors. According to Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC), Fitel had 688,900 PHS subscribers as of the end of November 2014, but local market analysts said the number of active PHS users is below 100,000.
