A newly developed ignition system allows an internal combustion engine to use lasers in place of spark plugs. In tests, the laser-based ignition improves combustion efficiency by 27 percent, and has the potential to significantly boost fuel efficiency in cars. Lasers are also great at keeping up with the cycles at which a car engine runs. They can be tuned precisely so that they fire at the exact time for ignition and multiple times during the same cycle to maximize fuel burn.
