3D Printed Roof to Improve Fuel Economy via @PDandD #3Dprinting #AdditiveManufacturing #innovati…

SABIC has revealed a new roof design for heavy duty vehicles that would enhance the vehicle’s fuel economy. The thermoplastic roof reduces drag and could increase the annual fuel economy of the vehicle by three percent. With the use of air ducts, the roof transfers airflow through and past the top and sides of its fairing, resulting in a near six percent drop in drag. The 3-D printed roof prototype, which was unveiled March 26 at the Mid-America Truck Show , could be SABIC’s answer to stricter fuel emission standards for medium and heavy duty trucks made after 2018. Those standards will like be set in the U.S. by March of 2016. “By improving the aerodynamic performance of this one application alone, fleet operators stand to save millions of dollars in fuel costs each year and over the lifetime of their entire vehicle fleet,” said Scott Fallon, general manager, Automotive, ...
