Valeo Shows Off 48V Water-cooled Electric Supercharger

France-based Valeo SA exhibited its 48V water-cooled electric supercharger for the first time in the world at Automotive Engineering Exposition 2015. The production of the supercharger is scheduled to begin at the end of 2015. And Audi AG plans to release a vehicle equipped with the supercharger in 2016. Combined with a water-cooled intercooler, it uses a cooling water circuit shared with the intercooler. In the past, Valeo repeatedly exhibited a 12V air-cooled electric supercharger. While the output of the 12V air-cooled supercharger is 1-2kW, that of the new supercharger is as high as 5kW because it is water-cooled and has a voltage of 48V. Valeo expects that the 12V air-cooled and 48V water-cooled superchargers will be used for engines with a displacement less than 2.0L and engines with a displacement of 2.0L or larger, respectively.
