As the old saying goes, the great thing about standards is that you have plenty to choose from. That was very much the case with functional verification coverage. Each vendor had different definitions for coverage metrics and how they were reported. So if, for example, you were to run simulations on two vendor’s tools with the same testbench and everything else set up exactly the same, you could still finish up with different values for coverage. That is clearly not a good outcome. But the problems do not stop there. Many large companies have copies of tools from multiple vendors and there was, until recently, no way to combine those results, or where it was possible the user had to jump through significant hurdles to get the necessary data extracted.
