At 1500 miles an hour, it’s the U.S. military’s fastest airborne fighting machine. To check it out, we sent Sue Karlin to Edwards Air Force Base, in California’s Mojave Desert, and to Nellis Air Force Base, in Las Vegas. Sue Karlin: Seventy thousand pounds of thrust. Mach 2 speeds. Nine g’ s. Add vertical acceleration, maneuverability, and stealth—and you’ve got the sauce that makes the F-22 Raptor the world’s fastest jet fighter. Col.
