Digital Processing Boosts Spectral Efficiency in Satellite Transponders

In an attempt to reduce operational costs and expand into new IP-based wireless services, satellite operators are pushing to maximize data throughput with a limited amount of available spectrum. In a recent demonstration, Intelsat partnered with Newtec , a Belgium-based company specializing in satellite communications, to underline the progress being made in spectral efficiency—transmitting 20 Mbits/s over 2 MHz in a single transponder. This degree of spectral efficiency was reached by upgrading a Newtec satellite modem with bandwidth cancellation (BWC) technology, which allows the transmission of two carriers in the same leased satellite bandwidth. This technology processes signals in the digital domain, using algorithms to increase cancellation, speed synchronization, and introduce monitoring parameters.
