Wave Glider Robot Takes On the Final Frontier in Hurricane Prediction - #IEEE

Hurricane prediction has come a long way since 2005’s Hurricane Rita missed its predicted target—Houston—entirely. Thanks to improvements in the way hurricane models measure and incorporate winds high up in the atmosphere, forecasters have a pretty good sense as far as three days ahead of time as to where a hurricane is heading; that’s why, today, evacuation orders have been issued for areas around New Orleans in advance of Hurricane Isaac. Where the forecasts have barely improved in the last ten years or so is in their predictions of intensity . Will Isaac continue to progress as a tropical storm, as it has in recent days, or jump up the hurricane intensity charts? Today, forecasters are speculating that it might grow to a Category 2 storm, but nobody really knows for sure.
