Monterrey Institute of Technology , one of the largest and most influential private universities in Latin America, was founded on September 6, 1943, in Monterrey, Mexico. The school is known as being the first university ever connected to the Internet in Latin America. León Ávalos y Vez, an MIT alumnus and then director-general of the school of electrical and mechanical engineering of the National Polytechnic Institute, designed its first academic programs and served as its first director-general. In 1950, the Monterrey Institute of Technology became the first foreign university in history to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, one of the six regional accreditation agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education.
