A malfunctioning satellite warning system nearly triggered a nuclear strike on the United States by the Soviet Union on September 26, 1983. The Soviet Union’s Nuclear Early Warning System twice reported the launch of American Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles from bases in the US. These missile attack warnings were correctly identified as false alarms by Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, an officer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Petrov’s decision may have prevented a tremendous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its Western allies. While an investigation of the satellite warning system later confirmed that the system had malfunctioned, the Cold War was at one of its most intense times.
