M2M-smartphones enable barista-free coffee makers Norihiro Satsukawa 10/3/2012 4:56 PM EDT MAKUHARI, Japan – Gaia Holdings, a Tokyo-based embedded software developer focused on M2M applications, is demonstrating this week at Japan’s largest consumer electronics show a number of connected “smart appliances.” They range from coffee makers to toys and exercise machines. A new twist is that the smart connectivity – proposed by Gaia – is enabled by simply adding a small, low-cost M2M wireless module to the existing appliances. No major re-architecting is required for the appliances themselves. The embedded wireless module, then, sends the raw data to one’s smartphone (and cloud services) for further data processing.
