New topology gives TI 10MHz dc-dc conversion

Similar to a two-phase buck converter, the added series capacitor allows the switching transistors to operate at half the input voltage, more than halving switching losses, TI energy systems engineer Pradeep Shenoy told Electronics Weekly. Shenoy has been working on the project for two years. “The topology was found in research literature, then our team spent two years making it work in practice,” he said. It’s first public outing is in the TPS54A20, a chip with a choice of 4, 7 or 10MHz operation (where 10MHz is two phases at 5MHz), and a 14ns minimum on-time. This short on-time allows operation with high input/output voltage ratios. It comes in a 20pin, 3.5 x 4 x 1mm thermally enhanced QFN package, and installed in a 4MHz, 10A evaluation board called TPS54A20EVM-770, for which there are PSpice transient models. TI’s own Webench design tool also been primed for the chip. ...
