24 October 2012—Two years ago, a handful of the world’s largest technology companies met at Google’s Mountain View, Calif., campus to devise a new peer-to-peer approach to communications. Participants at the October meeting, including representatives from Apple, Cisco, Microsoft, Mozilla, Opera, and Skype, kicked off an effort known as WebRTC to create open standards for real-time video, audio, and data communication via an Internet browser. The goal of the new standards is to make it easy for developers with little to no knowledge of telephony protocols to add communications capabilities to anything with an Internet connection.
