Children can be encouraged to LOVE science and tech

The view of those working in the tech sector is that students need to be encouraged towards these sectors much younger and at primary school. Almost a fifth of those tech professionals said knew they wanted to follow a STEM profession by the time they were 10 years old, and 46 per cent had made the decision by 16. Most respondents to the survey agreed that the emphasis for turning out future STEM professionals shouldn’t be placed on educators alone and that families and the industry should take on a greater responsibility. A majority said they fostered their love of STEM outside of the classroom, having enjoyed extra-curricular activities like the Science Museum with their family. MathWorks carried out its survey of 170 STEM professionals during its annual Matlab Expo UK event last month.
