TI’s research & development work is distributed throughout the company. That means TI business units have widespread access to innovative ideas that benefit TI customers. And it also means R&D staff have the means to quickly gauge customer reaction to a new idea. TI also boasts additional pockets of R&D teams that are organized in two ways: Some focus on broad areas of important technology such as vision and alternative energy, while others are organized around a particularly promising application that they explore single-mindedly, focused on rapidly demonstrating its viability. A third dimension of R&D activity casts an even wider net by involving university researchers and their students in exploring new ideas. In fact the decades-old digital signal processor (DSP) had its roots in university research, as have some of TI’s latest innovations to reach the market.
