2012 Review: Europe is still strong in design

I speak to many people in industry and 2012 was a year for digging in, trimming everything that could be trimmed and just looking at survival. A year of scrapping for business and cutting margins. Initial forecasts for 2013 look much the same with the market flat at best – not comforting thoughts to take into the Christmas period. However, maybe the statisticians need to factor in another consideration when they look at the state of the European market: design activity. Design is an important area for us and we have seen tremendous growth, posting year-to-date European sales gains of over 20% overall, with the UK up 19% and Germany up 16%. The key conclusion that these figures point to is that electronic design activity in Europe is still in a very healthy state. Serving the needs of design engineers in 2013 will require a different approach. Distributors must hold readily...
