A development of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Cambridge, the pump could lock the amp to fundamental constants, rather that it being derived indirectly from resistance or voltage using the quantum Hall and Josephson effects. Single-electron pumps (SEPs) create a flow of electrons by hopping them between quantum dots that can only hold one electron. They are only useful if they work fast enough to generate a reasonable current. “Up to now the development of a practical electron pump has been a two-horse race,” said NPL. “Tuneable barrier pumps use traditional semiconductors and have the advantage of speed, while hybrid turnstiles use superconductivity and have the...
