Taiwan halts nuclear power plant project #DIGITIMES

Taiwan halts nuclear power plant project Bryan Chuang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 29 April 2014] The Taiwan government, bowing to anti-nuclear pressure from the general public, has decided to immediately suspend construction on the country's nearly completed fourth nuclear power plant on the northeastern coast and let its fate be determined by a national referendum. Premier Jiang Yi-huah on April 28 announced that the completed reactor of the plant will not begin commercial operations after ongoing safety inspections are finished, and construction of its second reactor, which is 91.5% completed, will be suspended. If the new nuclear power plant is not brought into operation, power prices may rise and there may be power shortages in Taiwan in 2021, the government has warned, adding it may be necessary to increase renewable power and thermal power using natural gas.
