SAN JOSE, Calif. — At CES next week, the startup MagnaCom will demonstrate technology providing the equivalent of QAM-16384 modulation, a 40% increase in spectral efficiency over today's systems. It promises wireless connections that use less scarce spectrum or deliver higher data rates using the same bands. The higher modulation level would enable digital broadcast standards such as DVB-C2 and DVB-T2, which has been described but not implemented, said Yossi Cohen, the startup's chief executive. "Systems deployed today are at the QAM-1024 level, and companies have announced plans for products at the 2,049 and 4,096 levels, but to my knowledge there are no other working implementations at QAM-4096.
