Electric scooters get accurate range measurement

Austrian chip firm ams has developed a reference design for a simple current and voltage measurement circuit to produce state of charge readings for electric scooter batteries. The intention is to allow electric scooter manufacturers to replace more basic voltmeter displays with a fuel gauge. "With an accurate fuel gauge based on the AS8510, riders of cheap battery-powered scooters will be able to see exactly how much power remains, and can work out easily how far they can ride before needing to recharge," said Bernd Gessner, v-p and general manager of the automotive business unit at ams. Electric scooters are typically powered by four series-connected 12V lead-acid batteries. According to ams, the voltmeter dials may not provide the most accurate indication of the scooter's range, since the output voltage at the batteries has a non-linear relationship with state of charge...
