On this day in history, June 15, 1844, Charles Goodyear received patent number 3,633 from the U.S. Patent Office for vulcanized rubber. The first boots and garments made from rubber in America had cracked in the cold and melted in the heat. After a visit to New York City in 1834, Goodyear, an American self-taught chemist and manufacturing engineer, became determined to find a solution to these issues. After years of failed experiments, Goodyear finally had a breakthrough in 1839. Nathaniel Hayward, a former business partner, informed him that by mixing liquid latex and sulfur and heating it in the sun, he could create a process close to producing rubber in a bendable, stable form. Goodyear took the process a step further by either dropping or placing some of the sulfur-rubber concoction onto a wood-burning stove. The resulting product became the world’s first vulcanized ru...
