The breadth and velocity of planned HetNet deployments, along with the broad range of installation scenarios, are challenging service operators to take a “toolbox” approach for meeting their backhaul needs. Operators rely on a toolbox of different wired and wireless transport technologies for their diverse backhaul requirements. Wireless technology itself emerges as an important tool in serving their backhaul needs. Wireless backhaul has many advantages versus wired technologies, but wireless solutions also present unique design challenges: the need for spectrally efficient radio links, low operating power, small form factor, and environmentally hardened high-reliability equipment.
