Samsung targets wearable IoT devices with bio-processor

Samsung targets wearable IoT devices with bio-processor

Dubbed the bio-processor, the system-on-chip device will carry out various body monitoring functions including PPG, ECG, skin temperature, GSR and body fat. It is essentially a processor with integrated DSP (digital signal processing) for the processing of multiple data streams from various sensor inputs. The chip also integrates the analogue front end circuits for various body sensors. According to Samsung, the use of embedded DSP to process multiple data streams is more power efficient than if a MCU processed the data sequentially (see diagram). There is also a security application for the device with biometric data such as fingerprints and even heart rate rhythms being used for personal authentication. Biosensor devices are one of three target markets for Samsung Semiconductor. The others are mobile chipsets and imaging devices.
