The FPGA and FPRF (field programmable RF) chips inside Lime Micro's SDR can address a wide variety of applications. You might be forgiven for thinking that an announcement about a cellular operator deploying infrastructure to fill in "not spots" in 4G coverage doesn't have much to do with your favorite wireless application. But (perhaps) you'd be wrong. The open-source hardware and software solution in this network build-out is based around a software-defined radio (called LimeSDR) that is fully user programmable. In this case, the Ubuntu software runs an LTE stack on a processor card which interfaces with the LimeSDR to provide the radio access. The channel frequencies and bandwidth are selected by the software and the small cell is ready to roll.
