Compressed Air Used to Reduce Output Fluctuation of Wind Power

The facilities for verification of the CAES system New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Waseda University and the Institute of Applied Energy (IAE) announced April 20, 2017, that they have started a verification test of a CAES (compressed air energy storage) system. The CAES system uses a control technology that is based on the forecast of wind power generation. The system enables to stably use grid-connected wind power plants, whose output fluctuates depending on weather conditions, by using compressed air for charging and discharging. The outputs of wind and solar power plants greatly change depending on weather conditions and affect the stable supply of power, making it necessary to use output prediction and control technologies.
